When should you buy media on a cost-per-application basis?

Here at ClickIQ we are just starting to roll out our improved cost-per-application (CPA) product, but when should you buy your recruitment advertising on a CPA basis?

Unlike our friends in the US, buying media on a CPA basis is not something that happens much across Europe. However, that is all starting to change.

More and more media owners are offering it up as an option including Indeed, Jobrapido, Adzuna, and Glassdoor to name a few.

As a result, we have now updated our dashboard to report on it as a separate line item.

So, when should you use a CPA product?

The simple answer is when it improves your advertising return on investment.

The more technical answer is that before you can even start thinking about it, you need to put a few things in place.

  1. Firstly, you will need to be able to track data (i.e. count the number of applications by source). Either each media owner can provide you with individual tags on your site or ClickIQ can provide a single one that covers all of them. These tags give media owners comfort that the data is correct. They also provide you with real-time response and spend data at an individual job level all in one place.
  2. Secondly, we suggest you try some pay-per-click advertising so that you have a baseline to the CPA data. There is no point buying on a CPA basis if it ultimately works out as more expensive.
  3. Finally, let us know that this is something you want to do and we can put the deals in place on your behalf.

Many clients worry about quality, which is understandable, but you can use CPQA (cost-per-quality-application) to override this concern. CPQA strips out the non-relevant applicants or any applications from people who don’t live near the job you’re recruiting for.
